FAQs

Q: I am not sure which finish I want! What does “finish” even mean? HELP!

A: The finish of a foundation describes how the product will look on your skin after applying it.

A “glowy” or dewy finish foundation will make your skin look radiant – as if you have a glow from with in.

A “natural” finish foundation will mimick your skin type and should have you looking like you are wearing nothing at all. Natural finish foundations give you even coverage without looking like you have any product on your face.

A “matte” finish foundation will cancel out any oilyness on the skin and give you a flat, even base to work with. Matte foundations are typically a bit more drying and have a bit more coverage.

Q. But wait, what type of coverage do I need?

A: Light coverage means you want something that barely covers the skin. A light coverage foundation won’t cover up much but it may help even out some skin issues.

Full coverage means the foundation will cover everything – blemishes, dark circles, redness – you name it! Full coverage foundations may feel a little heavier on the skin but will really even out your base.

Medium coverage foundations fall somewhere in between.

Q. OK, but I really can’t figure out my undertone. What does underone mean anyways?? HELP!

A. First of all, lets define what undertone means. Your undertone is different from your skintone. In a way, your undertone refers to the vibes  your skintone gives off – its the underlying hue of your skin.

Warm undertones are typically more golden and yellow. Cool undertones are typically more red or pink. Neutral undertones are typically somewhere in the middle and can include olive tones.

It may be easier to think about the undertones of some of your favorite lipsticks.

The iconic MAC Ruby Woo lipstick is a blue based red lip – therefore it has a cool undertone. A warm based red lipstick might have a little more orange in it, like MAC Lady Danger.

There is A LOT of jargon floating around out ther regarding undertones but you can go about this a few different ways.

  • Do you have a foundation that already matches you? Take a look at Sephora.com, Ulta.com, or the brand”s website and see if they have given an undertone description for your shade. Now I do have to give a disclaimer and say that I don’t always agree with how brands describe deeper foundation shades and undertones, however, this is a good place to start. There are also brands like Cover FX, Estee Lauder and MAC who use undertones in their shade names. i.e. P120 from Cover FX = PINK 120 = Cool undertone.
  • You can also try the jewelry test. People with cool undertones tend to look better in silver jewelry, people with warm undertones tend to look better in gold jewelry and people with neutral undertones tend to look great in both!
